The Pivot Lab: Intro to UX Writing + Microcopy Practice
If you’re curious about UX writing but want more than a high-level explanation, this session is designed to help you actually experience the work.
The Pivot Lab: Intro to UX Writing + Microcopy Practice is a practical introduction for professionals who want to understand what UX writers do and try a key deliverable (microcopy) for themselves.
This session blends clarity, context, and hands-on practice so you can move from curiosity to confidence.
What this session covers
In this free, on-demand Pivot Lab session, I walk you through:
- What a real day in the life of a UX writer looks like
- Where UX writers work beyond big tech
- What UX writing is and isn’t
- How skills from journalism, marketing, education, and other problem-solving roles translate
- Core microcopy principles and best practices
You’ll also complete two short microcopy exercises inspired by real product scenarios, including an empty state and confirmation message rewrite.
There is no single “right” answer. The focus is on clarity, accessibility, and user-centered decision-making.
A hands-on introduction to microcopy
Microcopy is the small but powerful text that helps users move through digital experiences with confidence. This includes buttons and CTAs, form field labels and hints, and success, confirmation, and error messages.
In this session, you will:
- Learn how UX writers think through high-stakes moments
- Practice writing clear, supportive microcopy
- See how decisions are explained and documented
- Build confidence by doing the work, not just learning about it
This is often the moment where things click and people realize, “I can do this.”
Who this is for
This session is for experienced professionals who want to explore UX writing in a practical way.
You may be:
- Curious about UX writing but unsure what the work actually looks like
- Coming from journalism, marketing, education, customer support, or another strategic role
- Evaluating whether UX writing fits your strengths and interests
- Looking for a low-pressure way to try real UX writing tasks
If you want clarity without committing to a full course yet, this is a great place to start.
Why practice matters
You can read about UX writing all day, but confidence comes from doing.
This session helps you move past overthinking by giving you a realistic, supportive introduction to a core UX writing deliverable. You will leave with a clearer sense of the role and a better understanding of how your skills already apply.
My path into UX writing
I started my career as a newspaper journalist and later worked across fundraising, marketing, and e-commerce before discovering UX writing.
I pivoted into UX writing through a contract role at Etsy, where I was promoted to a Senior UX Copywriter and led UX content initiatives across the buyer experience for more than two and a half years.
Later, I became a founding UX content hire on a digital advisor experience team at a Fortune 500 financial services company, helping establish content foundations from the ground up.
This session reflects the kind of clarity and practice I wish I had earlier in my own pivot.
What you’ll walk away with
After this session, you will:
- Understand what UX writers actually do day to day
- See how your skills translate to UX writing
- Experience real microcopy work in context
- Feel more confident evaluating whether this path fits you
Most importantly, you will replace uncertainty with informed clarity. You’ll know whether you enjoy the work, and it takes less than half an hour to find out.
